Community Futures: Living Labs

14.00—14.50

Speakers:

When Universities work with the groups that surround them, they can be a formidable force and can reinvigorate civic life

Some of the more traditional institutions, however, remain sleeping giants. Hidden safely within ivory towers, they prefer to guard their considerable resources than use them to address the challenges that face those outside

What happens when researchers leave their labs, and talk directly to politicians, children, their international peers, to forge revolutionary collaborations with industry and with communities?

Can policy create a strategic framework that helps waken those sleeping giants? What measures can be taken to counteract the growing commercialism within some Academic institutions and help them move beyond token engagement?

This session will show how universities can become directly and meaningfully involved in the life of their surrounding communities to ensure sustainable future growth
